This course provides a critical overview of the Spanish language in the United States, looking into the intersection of history, politics, economics, race, language, and culture. The examination of constructed narratives, linguistic ideologies, and stereotypes surrounding the use of Spanish in American society and mass media is central to this class. Also, the analysis of Spanglish as a result of language contact (Spanish-English) focuses on sociolinguistic features and sociopragmatic use by Latinx speakers in bilingual communities.
Other Requirements: PREREQ: (SPANISH 321 AND SPANISH 322) OR (SPANISH 325 AND SPANISH 326)
