INTRODUCTION TO LATINX STUDIES

Introduction to the study of Latinx peoples and communities in the United States and to the interdisciplinary field of Latinx Studies. This class critically analyzes the diversity of Latinx histories, identities, communities, and experiences by reviewing recent scholarly literature and other culturally relevant materials. We will explore concepts, theories, and social issues at the core of Latinx Studies.
LATINX LITERATURE
LATINX 337
This course deepens students' knowledge of the literatures produced by U.S. citizens and/or U.S. residents of Latinx descent. It considers the complex ways in which 1) history, 2) group and individual experience, 3) cultural values and traditions, and 4) collisions and collaborations with other cultures in the US come together to shape Latinx identity, writing and overall literary expression.
SPANISH IN THE UNITED STATES
LATINX 380
This course provides a critical overview of the Spanish language in the United States, looking into the intersection of history, politics, economics, race, language, and culture. The examination of constructed narratives, linguistic ideologies, and stereotypes surrounding the use of Spanish in American society and mass media is central to this class. Also, the analysis of Spanglish as a result of language contact (Spanish-English) focuses on sociolinguistic features and sociopragmatic use by Latinx speakers in bilingual communities.
