Japan is the home of the longest-running monarchy on the planet. This class will focus primarily on the early centuries of the Japanese court system considering the roles of courtiers and women and servants in the eighth through thirteenth centuries. It will also look at the restoration of the emperor in the 19th century and what the monarchy means for Japan today. Students will use sources ranging from diaries to court records; gardening treatises to city plans; to explore the lives of people associated with the court and the royal court?s impact on Japanese history. The course includes a 12 to 15-page research paper that serves as one of the artifacts for the senior history portfolio course. |
