ARTISTS AND EXILES
|
Why was Paris a creative haven for expatriate writers, artists, and musicians? What
prompted these artists to leave their homes, and why did Paris provide such a fertile
environment? After a historical overview of Parisian history, we will focus on artistic/literary
movements associated with expatriates, such as the Lost Generation (Hemingway,
Fitzgerald, Stein, and others) as well as African-American writers (Baldwin, Wright, Himes,
and Hughes) and discuss current issues. We will also learn some traveler's French.
