Intensive study of a focused theme or topic in African, Asian, Middle Eastern, or Latin American history close to the research interests of the faculty member. The course includes a 12 to 15-page research paper that serves as one of the artifacts for the senior history portfolio course. This is a variable topics course.

Other Requirements: PREREQ: HISTRY 200, 6 CREDITS OF 300 OR 400 LEVEL HISTORY, OR CONSENT OF INSTRUCTOR

HY0212HY0212 Japans Royal Court
Japan is the home of the longest-running monarchy on the planet. This class will focus primarily on the early centuries of the Japanese court system considering the roles of courtiers women and servants in the eighth through thirteenth centuries but will also look at the restoration of the emperor in the 19th century and what the monarchy means for Japan today. Students will use sources ranging from diaries to court records gardening treatises to city plans to explore the lives of people associated with the court and the royal courts impact on Japanese history.
