ISTANBUL UNCOVERED

Through illustrated lectures and critical group discussions, students will investigate the art,
architecture, and material culture of the major metropolis now known as Istanbul, over a
thousand years, with particular focus on the early modern and modern periods. Beginning with
the archaeological remains of early inhabitants unearthed in the process of building a new
metro station, we will trace the long history of this imperial city situated at the crux of Europe
and Asia. From the founding of 'New Rome' by Constantine the Great in 330 CE, continuing
through the Byzantine-era iconoclasms, the Ottoman conquest in 1453, and the so-called
'Magnificent Century' of Sultan Su'leyman I (r. 1520'1566), into the age of railways and
photography, when antiquities laws were enacted and imperial museums founded; we will
conclude with a critical analysis of the contemporary phenomenon dubbed 'Ottomania,' or a
craze for all things Ottoman in twenty-first-century Turkey. The final paper will focus on the
representation of the art, architecture, and material culture of historical Istanbul in a select
piece of contemporary popular culture (choose from a novel, season of television, or a film).
