An introduction to music in the United States, with an emphasis on ways in which music has reflected and shaped the cultural lives and social institutions of various ethnic and racial groups. Includes study of music from pre-United States cultures, the synthesis of music from said cultures, and also styles uniquely American such as jazz, rock, and American pop music.
