A study of basic piano technique toward skill in playing five-finger patterns & triads in all major & minor keys, chord progressions in all major keys, major & harmonic minor scales, basic transposition, legato & staccato touch & responsiveness to phrasing.

A continuation of skills learned in MUS 002, including dexterity playing major & harmonic minor scales & arpeggios, harmonization of a given melody with block chord accompaniment, playing various rhythms including syncopation in simple, compound & asymmetric meters, & reading & playing two parts including alto or tenor clef.

FUNDAMENTALS OF MUSIC

This course is designed to acquaint the student with the fundamentals of music through experiences with the keyboard, rhythm instruments, singing, listening, & note reading. Required for some elementary education majors & open to the general student. Acceptable as preparation for a music major or minor program.
MUSIC THEORY II

Continuation of MUS 171. Melodic harmonization, voice-leading, harmonic & rhythmic progression, dominant seventh & leading-tone seventh chords, non-dominant seventh chords, Intro to modulation, secondary dominant & leading-tone chords, Intro to two & three-part forms & counterpoint will be studied. Required of students planning a music major or minor. Music majors & minors must enroll concurrently in MUS 182 to meet aural skills requirements.
