HY0212HY0212 BLACK PROTEST IN THE US
This course explores the long history of African American activism for social justice and Black empowerment since the Civil War. Sometimes described as the "Long Civil Rights" movement, the history of Black protest for empowerment, freedom, rights and human dignity is extensive. Roots of the transformative work of Dr. Martin Luther King and others in the 1950s and 60s are evident in the 19th and early 20th century work of African American writers and leaders. Black protest has also extended forward, far beyond the 1960s, where the unfinished demands of the Civil Rights Movement are still being sought through fair housing, fair employment, neighborhood empowerment, and just policing movements such as Black Lives Matter.
