HH2303HH2303 A HISTORY OF MEDIA
Starting with the invention of printing in Europe in the fifteenth century, we will examine its rapid spread throughout the continent, the rise of the public sphere, and the uses of print by high, 'middlebrow,' and popular cultures. The issues that arise in the history of printing'authorship, censorship, globalization, propaganda, and surveillance, among others'will then inform our investigation of the telegraph, radio, cinema, television, and the internet in the latter sections of the course.
