BEER AND WORLD CIVILIZATION
|
Do you want to learn more about beer? Yes? "Beer and World CIvilization, 7000 BC to the Present" is the class for you. In this course we will investigate the global history of brewing and drinking from prehistoric times to the present. Specific topics we'll cover include the invention of brewing in China and Mesopotamia, the beery miracles of St. Brigit in 6th century Ireland, monastic brewing in the middle ages, the "Golden Age" of Dutch beer in the 17th century, tavern culture in colonial North America, Prohibition in the USA and Canada, beer and Nazism in 1930s Berlin, shebeen culture in apartheid South Africa, indigenous beer cultures in Africa, Latin America, Southeast Asia, and the ongoing craft brewing revolution in the USA, among others.
