SURVEY OF WESTERN ART - ANCIENT TO MEDIEVAL (GA)

ARTHIST 201

An investigation of major works of art in painting, sculpture, architecture, and minor related arts from prehistoric times to the late middle ages. Emphasis on the relationship between art and culture. Students develop skills in artistic analysis. Slide illustrated.

SURVEY OF WESTERN ART - RENAISSANCE TO 1900 (GA)

ARTHIST 202

An investigation of major works in painting, sculpture, architecture, and related arts from the early Italian Renaissance to 1900. Students develop skills in artistic analysis and an understanding of the discipline of art history. Slide illustrated.

INTRODUCTION TO MODERN AND CONTEMPORARY ART (GA)

ARTHIST 203

This course is designed to allow for a thematic approach to the study of art in the twentieth and twenty-first centuries. Course material will explore the art, artists, and theory related to modern and contemporary art.

MEDIEVAL ART (GA)

ARTHIST 312

This course takes a thematic approach to the art and architecture of important institutions of the Middle Ages. Students are introduced to sculpture, painting, manuscript illumination, architecture, mosaics, and other decorative arts, as well as cultural issues and Christian symbolism.

NORTHERN RENAISSANCE ART (GA)

ARTHIST 314

This course is designed to allow for a thematic approach to the unique art and art historical circumstances which existed in the Lowlands, France, Germany and Spain during the fourteenth through sixteenth centuries. Course material may focus on particular topics and issues specific to the study of Northern Reniassance art.

ART THEORY

ARTHIST 420

An advanced course dealing with the theoretical concerns of the visual arts. The course treats art in its relation to current philosophical thought, and also discusses aesthetics and the nature of art. For Art Department majors and minors. Offered spring term only.

INDEPENDENT STUDY

ARTHIST 498

Study of a selected topic or topics under the direction of a faculty member. Repeatable for a maximum of 6 credits in major/degree.
