CONTEMPORARY JAPANESE SOCIETY

This course examines contemporary Japanese society. It includes a study of social institutions, processes, and culture of Japan. the course examines following areas: (a) culture (beliefs, customs, social identity); (b) social institutions (family, religion, education, work, media); (c) societal processes (socialization, deviance, urbanization); (d) inequalities (gender, income, race-ethnic, region); and (e) the politics, economy, and international position of Japan.

Other Requirements: COREQ: CONCURRENT OR PRIOR COMPLETION OF A COURSE ON EAST ASIA OR AN EAST ASIAN LANGUAGE, OR CONSENT OF INSTRUCTOR

This is a hybrid course so will have classroom meetings plus on-line instruction. Requires instructor consent plus a deposit of $300 that goes towards the study-tour trip cost of approximatley $3750. Students will also participate in the faculty-led travel study component of the course scheduled in Japan from May 22-June 04, 2008. Contact the Office of International Education & Programs (email: studyabroad@uww.edu) for information about course registration or for a program application and Larry Neuman (neumanl@uww.edu), Kasumi Kato (katok@uww.edu) for academic requirements. Applications are due to the Office of International Education & Programs December 14, 2007. A $300 program deposit will be charged to the student's account shortly thereafter. Not available with WINS registration.
