SOCIAL AND CULTURAL FOUNDATIONS IN COUNSELING

Counselor Education 741

This course is designed to provide students with foundational knowledge and competency base for effective counseling with diverse populations. We will examine multicultural and pluralistic trends, including characteristics and concerns among diverse groups nationally and internationally. Theories of multicultural counseling, identity development, worldviews, acculturation issues, conflict resolution, social justice, advocacy and multicultural competencies will be discussed. Individual, couple, family, group and community strategies for working with and advocating for diverse populations will be examined. Counselors' roles in eliminating biases, prejudices, oppression and discrimination will be highlighted.
