This course explores the social, cultural, and educational issues connected to the experiences in schools of youth who are being raised in families and communities where languages other than English are commonly spoken. Some of these issues are: translanguaging (multilingual) teaching and learning, multicultural education, politics of language education and policy in the US; race, racism, and discrimination in schooling; design and implementation of bilingual and English as a 'Second' Language (ESL) programs; theories of second language acquisition; pedagogy and methods for teaching ESL; the social context of schooling and learning in the US; the role and meaning of culture.
