HH1312HH1312 DRUGS, DRINKING, AND HISTORY
This course will cover the global social, economic, cultural, and gender history of drugs and alcohol from prehistory to the present. Specific topics include the prehistoric invention of brewing, beer and wine in ancient Greece and Rome, spirits in colonial America, the Opium Wars, Prohibition, the rise of the global cocaine trade, shebeen (speakeasy) culture in apartheid-era South Africa, and the Superbowl.
