HY0214HY0214 HMONG AMERICAN STUDIES
This course introduces students to the major problems in Hmong American Studies, an emerging interdisciplinary field of inquiry that deals with the history, cultural production, and contemporary concerns and experiences of Hmong Americans. Central to the course are debates and issues related to Hmong identities, the ways in which race, class, culture, gender, and sexuality inform contemporary Hmong America, and the agency of Hmong Americans to shape and transform their lives as well as contemporary U.S. history, culture, and society. Central to the course is also a critical evaluation of how the dynamic realities of Hmong America confront multicultural America and the global community. We will also pay particular attention to the ways in which the experience of Hmong Americans were shaped and continue to be shaped by their history in relations with Asian nations such as China, Thailand, Laos, and Vietnam as well as other nations in the Hmong diaspora, such as France, Australia, Canada, Argentina, French Guyana, and German.
