Designed to acquaint students with basic educational techniques; to develop in students the ability to utilize effectively techniques characteristic of science programs, namely, laboratory learning to acquaint students with new approaches to science; to familiarize students with new developments in the science curriculum; to help students gain a broad vision of their teaching profession, their science area and their responsibilities to all students.
THE TEACHING OF SOCIAL STUDIES IN THE SECONDARY SCHOOL

This course extends the foundational knowledge and skills developed in Social Studies Methods I (SECNDED 425). Students will examine social studies-specific resources and technological tools, practice lesson, unit and course planning, and consider the complexities and strategies for meeting the needs of all students. Students will consider strategies for facilitating discussion and will practice teaching a social studies topic to their classmates. Students will develop a personal teaching philosophy statement, complete an Informed Civic Action Project, and reflect on planning for and engaging in civic activism. Students will create a mini-unit addressing media literacy, misinformation, disinformation, credibility, and political polarization.
