SURVEY OF EDUCATIONAL LINGUISTICS

CIGENRL 310

In Survey of Educational Linguistics, students will examine certain core areas of linguistics (phonology, morphology, syntax, semantics), with special attention to language acquisition and sociolinguistics. Course assignments will relate to the teaching of linguistically diverse communities.

THEORIES FOR DEVELOPING LANGUAGES & LITERACIES

CIGENRL 320

In this course, students will develop a working knowledge of contemporary issues and theories in sustaining home and community languages, learning additional languages, and reclaiming heritage languages. This course is particularly focused on developing a strong theory base for how languages are taught and learned, as well as the reasons and goals of biliteracy and multimodal literacy education.

INTRODUCTION TO BILINGUAL/BICULTURAL EDUCATION AND ESL

CIGENRL 350

This course explores the social, cultural, and educational issues connected to the experiences in schools of youth who are being raised in families and communities where languages other than English are commonly spoken. Some of these issues are: translanguaging (multilingual) teaching and learning, multicultural education, politics of language education and policy in the US; race, racism, and discrimination in schooling; design and implementation of bilingual and English as a 'Second' Language (ESL) programs; theories of second language acquisition; pedagogy and methods for teaching ESL; the social context of schooling and learning in the US; the role and meaning of culture;

CRITICAL ISSUES IN LINGUISTICALLY SUSTAINING EDUCATION

CIGENRL 354

This course uses critical theories and socio-cultural approaches to examine schooling and learning environments at large and specifically with regard to multilingual/bilingual learners. We explore educational contexts in the US through critical lenses, paying close attention to ¿multicultural education¿ practices and learning environments for multilingual/ bilingual learners. This includes an examination of immigration policy and immigrant student experiences.

MIDDLE SCHOOL CURRICULUM AND INSTRUCTION

CIGENRL 384

The overarching purpose of this course is to provide practical and theoretical perspectives combined with the insight, understanding, and imagination of participants, who draw on their experiences and empathic understandings to develop practical, thoughtful, and careful ways to meet the needs and interests of middle school students. Participants will develop guiding questions that explore purposes, practices, and inspiration for life and learning in young adolescence.

ASSESSMENT IN THE ESL/BILINGUAL CLASSROOM

CIGENRL 405

This course explores policies, procedures, and instruments used to assess English language proficiency and academic achievement of limited English proficient students in American public schools. Included in this are the areas of English and native language competence; program placement, progress, and exit; alternative assessments in ESL, bilingual and mainstream classrooms.

CURRENT TOPICS IN EDUCATION

CIGENRL 410

An in-depth examination of a single current topic of interest to preservice teachers seeking licensure in Early Childhood through Grade 12. Topics will vary from semester to semester, and may include, for example, discussions of national curriculum standards for school subjects, assessment issues, intervention, etc.

PRINCIPLES OF CAREER AND TECHNICAL EDUCATION

CIGENRL 460

This course examines the history and development of career and technical education both in the United States and Wisconsin. The administrative structure of career and technical education at the local, state, and national levels is outlined. Career and technical education (CTE) program areas are discussed with emphasis given to issues, trends, and problems in career and technical education. Students will be introduced to the 12 elements of high quality Career and Technical education, learn about CTE-specific pedagogy and begin applying them to planning, instruction, and assessment. This course meets the Department of Public Instruction's course requirement for vocational certification (1281).

STUDENT TEACHING SEMINAR

CIGENRL 470

Discussion and writing about practical issues of teaching as experienced in the full-time directed teaching semester. Incorporates presentations and panels by experienced educators as well as large- and small-group interaction to promote reflection and inform beginning teachers. Repeatable.

EMPLOYMENT STRATEGIES

CIGENRL 489

Offered on a satisfactory/no credit basis only. Designed to acquaint the teacher education student with the problems and procedures of securing a teaching position. Includes consideration of professional ethics, preparation of placement credentials, teacher licensure practices, interviewing techniques and teaching contracts. Reviews opportunities for professional advancement through graduate study. (Open to teacher education students. Should be taken the semester prior to graduation or the semester of graduation.

Study of a selected topic or topics under the direction of a faculty member. Repeatable.
