FREEDOM IN EUROPE 1300-1788
|
Between the 14th and 18th centuries, ideas of "freedom" in Europe underwent dramatic changes, as the eras of Renaissance, Reformation, Absolutism, and Enlightenment introduced new concepts, and revised accepted notions of individuality, gender, behavior, free will, rights, and social obligations. Our course will explore these issues by pairing early-modern texts with current scholarship, to analyze the forces that shaped liberty and the meanings and implications they hold for our world.
